In cats, a very common cause of bald spots next to the tail are due to them pulling out hair due to itching from fleas. If Koko isn't up to date on his flea treatment, I can get can you a flea treatment program. First, I would give him Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas within 30 minutes. Then follow up with a spot on treatment, such as Advantage or Revolution. This is a treatment that has to be used once a month. You will also have to disinfect the environment. Wash his bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. I would try this first to see if it helps with the bald spot. If it doesn't, or if he is up to date on his flea treatments, then I would have Koko seen by the vet. The cost of an exam with the vet varies by city and clinics within the city, so you can call around to find out the cost of an exam. Keep in mind any diagnostics and medications would cost extra. I will put a link to website where you can find low cost clinics in your area: http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/resources/tips/trouble_affording_pet.html?credit=web_id91754962
