What is this growing lump on my dog's head? Should I call the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My 10 month old bulldog had a small lump on his head yesterday that had no hair on it and scabby, today it is larger and the scab has gone. Any ideas what this could be? Should I call an emergency vet or wait till its open tomorrow?

Given that the lump has grown over night, I would be inclined to think that your dog may have an abscess. I would call an emergency vet to see him today. That's because if he does have an abscess, it will grow bigger until it bursts, and it needs to be treated before it does that. It would also be painful to him. The vet can diagnose if he does have an abscess, and can treat him for it. The abscess will need to be opened and drained sterilely, and he will need antibiotics to treat the infection. I would have him seen by a vet now.
