My rescue dog's legs twitch when lying down. Is it anxiety or habit?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Springer Spaniel | Male | neutered | 5 years and 4 months old | 50 lbs

My 5 yr old ESS rescue dog lays with his back legs spread out, then makes jerking motions with his legs. We have only had him 4 mos & he came here with medications for nervousness, which he no longer takes. Is this just some habit of his or a sign he is nervous? Thanks.

Without seeing what he is doing, it is hard to know the cause. It could that he is nervous but he could also have a neurological problem. The best thing would be to have your vet take a look at him. You could record him and show your vet so your vet can actually see what he is doing and then decide if any treatment is needed.
