My 6 yr old dog has had a bout with constipation for about a week. Then he seemed type to pass some soft stool and we thought he was getting better. Now he has straining with a little bit of loose water like bowel movements several times a day.what can we do to help him?

Hello. Often with diarrhea, not constipation, there are quite a bit of abdominal cramping, hence the straining. I would try to rest Max's gut for 12-24 hours with no food & limited water. Tomorrow, start back on a 75% white rice, 25% plain cooked chicken, & a little low fat cottage cheese. Very small, but frequent meals work best. You can add a good probiotic, like Proviable ( Nutramax ) or FortiFlora ( Purina ). If he seems comfortable, take a few days to transition back to his regular food. If he still is having problems, shows any abdominal pain, fever, loss of appetite or vomiting, please see your veterinarian as soon as you can. Hopefully, Max will be feeling better soon. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
