Why is my dog reverse sneezing? When should I take him to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd - miniature | Male | neutered | 1 year and 9 months old | 39 lbs

So clearly I didn’t explain myself... MY DOG IS REVERSE SNEEZING! He had a 1 min spasm yesterday which we pinpointed to the candles. This morning, took him to daycare, THEY claimed he started “coughing” 10-15min saying that it sounded like he wanted to clear out something. He was sent home for precaution. HE HAS NOT BEEN COUGHING! He has had 2 short REVERSE SNEEZING spasms less than a few seconds since being sent home. What is going on and when should this warent seeming a vet?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Reverse sneezing could be caused by an irritation or foreign object in the nasopharyngeal region. I have found several cases having a blade of grass or something else lodged in the nasal cavity that migrated and caused consistent reverse sneezing. If the sneezing does not go away, I would recommend a veterinarian taking a second look at him. He may need diagnostic imaging done such as x-rays or a rhinoscopy for further testing. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
