What's this persistent black spot or scab on my kitten's chin?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 8 months and 10 days old | 5 lbs

Hello, I adopted a kitten from Pet Smart a little over a month ago. I noticed she had a black spot on her chin, but I thought it was a random black dot. Later I realized it was like a scab. It's the same size and won't go away. Doesn't hurt her in anyway. I just don't know what it is and what to do.

This is chin acne. I recommend cleaning the area and making sure she is eating and drinking out of ceramic or stainless steel bowls. Plastic bowls collect bacteria and when cats eat out of them the bacteria gets into their skin creating acne. Severe chin acne should be treated with antibiotics. So if this is not resolving then I recommend a veterinarian. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
