Why does my puppy eat poop? What causes it and how to stop it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 month and 23 days old

My 8 week Labrador puppy ate her stool. I don't know what to do, when I saw her doing that I 'punished' her saying 'don't do that!' I don't know if that was right to do or not. What are the reasons for her to do it? What should I do if I see her doing it again?

Puppies eat their poop for a couple of reasons. One is that they simply like the taste, which is disgusting. Another reason is intestinal worms. I wold take Aika into the vet with a sample of her feces so the vet can determine if she does have intestinal worms, which are common in puppies. Should she have intestinal worms, the vet can prescribe a deworming treatment for her. You did the right thing by tell her no, and if you notice her trying to eat her poop again, distract her right away with a toy or some love and attention. Move her away from the poop right away when she's done.
