What causes sudden death in a 2-year-old dog with appetite loss?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Male | neutered | 2 years old | 20 lbs

My aussie just turned 2 years old this month and passed away early this morning and I'm wondering if anyone can help answer some questions. He was extremely skinny from refusing to eat and just stopped walking. I went to give him a bath and noticed his paws and mouth (lips and tongue) were really cold. 30 minutes into the bath he stopped breathing. My husband did mouth to mouth and he spit up blood then took one last breath. I know that's not a lot of info but what could've caused a sudden death

I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your dog! How awful, especially at such a young age. Weight loss, not eating, weakness and bloody vomit could be caused by quite a few different things, so I'm afraid it's hard to say what might have caused his death. He may have had an intestinal obstruction due to swallowing something he shouldn't have, an abdominal tumor of some kind, a severe systemic illness like liver or kidney disease, or he could have ingested something toxic. If you want to try and find out what it might have been, you could ask your vet to do an autopsy (called a necropsy in animals) to check for any obvious problems that could have caused his death. Again, I'm very sorry for your loss.
