My cat has clear tear duct discharge. Is it serious and what to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 1 year and 6 months old | 8 lbs

My cat is an 18 month old, American Shorthair. Eats, drinks, plays, socializes well. Over the past month a clear discharge has been running from the tear duct. Her eye is not sensitive, nor does she mind me wiping it. Once a day is all that is necessary. What's wrong, and what should I do?

It's probably either an eye injury or an eye infection, you need to take her to the vet so they can check the eye under a special light and staining, then she will probably need prescription antibiotic eye drops for 1-2 weeks if it's nothing serious.
