Cat has bloody urine, ammonia smell. What's wrong? Can't afford vet.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 14 years and 8 months old | 18 lbs

My cat is showing blood in urine with strong ammonia smell. What could that mean? I can't afford vet. Is there something you could provide a prescription filled that I could get filled at one of the on line pet pharmacy.? You need a vet prescription to get meds.

We are unable to provide prescriptions, it is not legal for any vet to prescribe medications without the animal being directly under their care and recently examined to diagnose accurately the underlying condition. Maintaining fluid intake with chicken broth, pedialyte and fresh water can help to flush the bladder but urine tests should be done to identify any infection, inflammation or stones. Enquire of your local charities for subsidized clinics or care credit

I'm sorry to hear that Mika has a urinary problem! Bloody urine can be a sign of cystitis, bladder stones, or a bladder or kidney infection. In an older cat like Mika, this often occurs as a result of a systemic illness like chronic kidney failure or diabetes - so she really needs some diagnostic testing to help sort out what's wrong. Unfortunately, it is illegal for a veterinarian to prescribe medication for any pet without a physical exam, so you will need to have Mika seen by a local veterinarian in person to be treated. If costs are a concern, there may be a low-cost SPCA clinic near you who could help. You can also apply online for Care Credit, which is a payment plan accepted by most vet clinics: www.carecredit.com
