Why does my indoor cat have itchy neck bumps with no visible bugs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 8 years and 7 months old | 7 lbs

Over the last few weeks my cat has developed raised bumps around her neck and has been itching a lot, the bumps have increased and they look similar to bits, but there are no visible bugs on her. She is an indoor cat, and nothing has changed in environment or diet. I noticed it when i got back from a week vacation. She does tend to get separation anxiety when I leave and is scared of other people. But I've been back for over a week now. Any ideas?

Poor Luna! There are a number of skin conditions that can cause bumps like this with excessive itching, even in an indoor cat. The most common possibilities would include allergies (which can develop over time, so this could be the problem even if nothing has changed), fleas, a bacterial or fungal skin infection, or skin mites. Treatment will depend on what the underlying problem is, so I would recommend taking Luna to the vet for an exam as soon as you are able to - he/she can do some simple skin tests if needed to help determine the problem and get her started on appropriate medication to treat it.
