Will Furosemide worsen my dog's kidney failure immediately or later?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 14 years old | 5.4 lbs

Hi. My dog is in kidney failure & has Pulmonary Hypertension. We are waiting on meds from the compound pharmacy. However, I notice that his breathing is sometimes laboured. It may be another 5 days before I get his meds. He used to be on furosemide but was taken off. I'm considering putting him back on the Furosemide (will speak to my vet first) but, I'm concerned that it will make the kidney failure worse. Does Furosemide affect the kidney immediately or does it only cause issues long-term

Since furosemide causes rapid fluid loss and can result in rapid dehydration, it can affect the kidneys immediately and the effects can also be long lasting. I would definitely recommend discussing this with your vet to determine what can be done to help Memi be more comfortable while you are waiting for her new medication to arrive. Good luck!
