My dog has diarrhea for 7 days but acts normal. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 10 lbs

My dog has had diarrhea for approximately seven days, he continues to eat and drink as normal, has very similar energy levels them before he got sick. Four days later, my other dog got sick with the same illness and is experiencing very similar symptoms her energy level dropped for about eight hours, but she is sort of back to normal and eating and drinking still. I have not taken them to a vet because they cotnuniue to eat and drink and behave the same. Should I wait it out?

Poor Fred! I'm glad to hear that he is still eating, drinking, and acting normally. Since your other dog showed similar signs, it seems most likely that the diarrhea is caused by a viral illness, but other causes, such as intestinal parasites or gastroenteritis from dietary indiscretion cannot be definitively ruled out. Even though Fred seems to be doing well despite the diarrhea, 7 days is a long time to experience diarrhea. There is a good chance that he is at least mildly dehydrated due to these ongoing fluid losses. At this point, it would be best to take him to the vet for an exam and any necessary diagnostic testing so that supportive medications can be started. I hope this helps and that Fred is on the mend soon!
