My healthy puppies have coccidia but show no signs. Should I treat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I am a foster for a rescue in Arkansas. Myself and another foster has 7 puppies that we have had for over a month now, they all 7 are happy healthy pups. None of them have any diarrhea or vomiting. None of them are lethargic or anything. They are all eating and drinking great. They live in 2 completely different houses 20 miles apart. But yesterday at their spay appointment all 7 ,we was told, tested positive for coccidia! None have ever shown any signs at all. Is it possible to not show signs?

These puppies most likely have a low level infection of coccidia. Even though they are not symptomatic I would still recommend treating them so they don’t become further infected in the future. Since both sets of puppies have the protozoa they most likely had contracted it before you began fostering them. Coccidia can be easily treated and once gone, does not cause further issues. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
