Why is my dog sick after boarding with vomiting and bloody stool?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 11 months and 15 days old | 45 lbs

11 month old aussie Shepard mix we just picked him up from being boarded for 4 days. Since last night he has vomited once, loose stool with mucus and it’s tinged red a couple times, would not eat dry food but did have boiled chicken and rice this morning. Lethargic and drowsy all day. What should I do?

It sounds like Nash has signs of colitis. This is common in dogs who are under stress, such as from boarding. However, the vomiting and not eating concerns me. These dogs can develop hemorrhagic gastroenteritis that can be life threatening. I would encourage you to have him evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. An emergency veterinarian tonight would be ideal. Fluid therapy, probiotics, bland diet, and possibly antibiotics may also be recommended. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon.
