My dog ate chocolate and is throwing up and shivering. Vet now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | unneutered | 15 lbs

I have a Pomeranian male dog and he is probably between 8-15 pounds and he ate 5 pieces of choclate. He keeps throwing up a lot and he keeps shivering which is not normal because he doesn't shiver much since he has a lot of hair and its really hot right noe in texas. The choclate was from the Brand Russell Stover. The sugar is 18g and sodium is 60mg.Should i take him to the vet?

For a 10 pound dog, 85g of milk chocolate may cause mild symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, increased heart rate, tremors, and increased urination. Since he is vomiting, I would recommend taking him to the vet to give him medication to calm his stomach and determine if he needs supportive care. I'm a bit worried that he could have eaten more chocolate then you realize based on how much he seems to be reacting to it. Going to the emergency clinic tonight would be ideal if possible. Otherwise, offer him small amounts of water and food once he stops vomiting, and take him to his regular vet first thing in the morning. Good luck!
