My puppy is suddenly aggressive to dogs after an incident. How to fix?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 11 months and 17 days old | 27 lbs

My puppy is 11 months old and he was always very social with other dogs and humans. After having one bad experience with another dog, he is now EXTREMELY fearful and aggressive around all other dogs/ some humans. He won't bite, but he gets pretty close. No matter how hard I try to distract him, he won't stop barking and freaking out. How can I fix this so that he is friendly with other dogs again? My roommate wants to get a dog but we are worried my dog will hurt him.

This type of behavior is often due to anxiety and is not likely to improve with training alone. I would strongly recommend talking to your vet about anti-anxiety/ behavior modification medication which can make a huge difference! Often times, training is also needed in conjunction to medication. I would DEFINTILEY get that under control before considering adding a new dog to the home. Best of luck to you and Astro!
