Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 80 lbs

My dog excessively licks. he will sit there for like 20-40 minutes just licking your hand, foot, knee, etc while he stares at you. he also licks the metal heat/air conditioning grate thing in the room and sometimes the other dogs. he dosent lick himself or anything like carpet or clothing. is this normal?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It could just be a compulsive behavior that is just behavioral and not medical since he doesn't lick himself or the carpet. As long as you can tell him to stop and he responds it is likely just normal for him. I hope this helps!
