My 9-week-old puppy's poop is soft and wet. Should I be concerned?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Samoyed | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 3 days old | 15 lbs

New puppy. 9 weeks old. Had for 1 week. We have been slowly changing her food from what the breeder fed her. She also eats poop. Her poop, poop from outside when we take her for a walk. Since last night her poop has been getting softer and softer. And now it's pretty wet. No shape to it but also not a puddle. She still needs more puppy shots. Is this something we should be worried about?

Hello, and thank you for your question. Given than Cholula is a puppy and prone to eating poop, here is a high chance that her diarrhea is due to intestinal parasites. Other possibilities include a gut infection (gastroenteritis), or dietary sensitivity. If her stools are not improving in the next 1-2 days, I would recommend getting her to the vet. They can test a stool sample for parasites, and prescribe supportive medication to help the diarrhea. In the meantime, try offering Cholula small, frequent meals of a bland diet such as boiled chicken and white rice. You can also offer a probiotic supplement such as Fortiflora. Ensure she is taking in plenty of water, as diarrhea can cause dehydration especially in young pups. I hope this helps, and that Chohula feels better soon!
