Benadryl not helping my dog's allergic reaction. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Terrier | Female | spayed | 5 years and 7 months old | 25 lbs

My boston terrier is having an allergic reaction, she has had them before. Generally I bring her to the vet, however the last time I brought her they told be to treat her with Benadryl rather then bringing her in each time. She has been if experiencing this reaction since 3:30 yesterday and I have been administering 25mg of Benadryl every 8 hours. How long can I continue to give her Benadryl? Should I bring her to the vet?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If she has not responded to the Benadryl at this point, it is unlikely that she will and she may require stronger medications for it such as a corticosteroid. I do recommend that you have Maci evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good night!
