My cat keeps licking her spay incision. Is it healing properly?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 4 months and 2 days old | 5 lbs

Hello! My four month old female cat got spayed about four days ago. I noticed she has been licking the incision which I was told by the vet I took her to, that she isn't allowed to do so. So I've tried to get her to stop but she doesn't so I will have to get her a cone. But I was just wondering if her incision appears to be healing ok? There isn't any bleeding, or discharge or any pain.

The incision looks closed but has a bigger scab and more irritythan normal. That is from the excessive licking. Yes please get her a cone. If she stops licking this should heal fine. If she stops eating or there is puss or odor but the incision the. She needs to go back in for a recheck. She could get an infection from the licking. I'm not sure how long it's been since she was spayed but it does look like it's healing well. Make sure to continue to keep an eye on her and discourage licking as well as trying to keep her from jumping up and down on things and running around for another five to seven days to make sure she continues to heal well and completely.

It looks a little red and irritated. It looks like she has likely been licking it. If she is licking it I would have your vet fit her for a cone collar and also have your vet take a peek at it to ensure she doesn't need any antibiotics or any more surgical glue to help keep it closed. If she continues to lick it, it will only get worse and not heal. Also make sure you are keeping her confined. Too much activity or jumping can cause delayed healing. I hope this helps!
