Dog has diarrhea after meds. What food helps & when to call vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 70 lbs

My dog had diarrhea this morning and his nose seems to be dry. He had anti infection injection for his ears 3 days ago but today he got the diarrhea. My vet said the injection gives him quite gas and its normal to be that way. Is it okay. And what foods do you give if he has diarrhea?

Loose stool is common with certain antibiotics, so this is likely the case for Baby. It may not be serious right now, but it's always possible that it could be the start of something serious. If Baby has any of the following, then he should see a vet: 1) Blood in diarrhea 2) Very watery diarrhea 3) Starts acting very depressed 4) Stops eating or drinking for longer than 24 hours. 5) Diarrhea lasts longer than three days. You can help him get through this by feeding bland food (boneless chicken and cooked rice is good). Feed small portions (1/2 cup or less) three times a day. You can also add probiotics (yogurt can be supplemented if probiotic powder not available) to the food, which has demonstrated some efficacy for improving diarrhea. Ensure fresh, clean water is always available. I hope this helps and Baby gets better soon.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Baby! Antibiotics and other medications can cause an upset stomach. Baby could be lethargic because he doesn’t feel well. Diarrhea can be from medications, viral or bacterial infections, parasites, dietary indiscretion, food allergy or intolerance. I recommend contacting your vet to let them know Baby hasn’t been well since the visit. Maybe they will want to see him again or have you pick up medications. You can also start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20lbs per day until 2 normal stools. I hope this helps and I wish Baby the best!
