How long can crushed dog pills sit in food and remain effective?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 13 years and 11 months old | 5.4 lbs

My dog is in kidney failure and is refusing food. Even food he used to love :( Unfortunately, he's also in heart failure & needs his heard meds. He has extreme fear aggression from a rough past before I got him at 9 yrs old. I have to crush his pills & put them in something as he will not allow me to put anything in his mouth. Problem is I have to just wait for him to eat it (hopefully) at some point. How long can the pills sit like this (crushed & mixed with mashed potatoes and gravy)?

I would say that I would not let the pills sit longer than 8 hours crushed and sitting in food. If it has been that long I would get rid of the medications and make up new ones for him to take. American cheese is a great way to get pills into a dog and another trick is to not actually touch the pills with your fingers. I would shake the pill onto a hard surface and then drop a piece of cheese right over the top. Doing this will prevent your fingers coming in contact with the pills and he will not taste any residue on the outside of the cheese with this method. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
