How to stop my rescue dog from biting and growling when picked up?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 1 month old | 26 lbs

I just got my dog as a rescue (she was a street dog) and she growls and bites when I try to pick her up. I do not know if this is a fear response or an aggressive dominance response. How would you suggest correcting this problem?

This type of behavior is almost always fear aggression. I would strongly recommend talking to your vet about anti-anxiety/ behavior modification medication which can make a huge difference! Sometimes it is only needed for a short while- long enough to lower the fear threshold so that true learning can occur. Usually, training is needed in conjunction to medication. Best of luck anf congratulations on your new girl!
