Why is my 6-month-old puppy eating her poop, and how can I stop it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 6 months and 17 days old | 30 lbs

I have a 6 1/2 month old hound mix. Lately, she's been eating her poop. I've been reading some stuff on the internet, but do you have any recommendations on how to get her to stop. She is well fed, whole grain, and I also give her chicken breast mixed in her food. Thanks

Dani eating her feces is not necessarily an indication that she has a poor diet. Some dogs just do this because of a behavioral issue. The best way to address this is to clean up her feces after every time she defecates. If this is not feasible then you can ask your veterinarian about a product called Forbid that you sprinkle on top of her food that will discourage her from eating her poop. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
