My puppy has eye swelling after rabies shot. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 30 days old | 7 lbs

My puppy got her rabies vaccination today - I just noticed this under her eye now. Is this normal? Her temperament has been normal. She’s 4 months old. I’m worried, and my vet is closed now. Thank you!

It can be a sign of a reaction to the vaccine. If that is the case, the swelling may spread around her muzzle and spot bumps can appear on her body and legs. You can give an over the counter antihistamine such as Benadryl to help with the reaction. If it proceeds to spread and gets worse and itch her, then I would contact an ER clinic for further care.
