My cat keeps getting new lumps. Should I be concerned about cancer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My 6YO female cat (late spay 4YO) had a chest mass removed a year ago - it was benign. Recently we noticed another one! While in surgery the vet called to tell me it is gone - he can't find it (he did see it two weeks ago). He thinks it could have been a cyst that went away on its own. What could cause multiple masses? Should I ignore them in the future? I lost a cat to mammary cancer so I know how devastating that can be. She has a heart mummer so I want to avoid putting her under frequently.

Unfortunately masses on cats I would not just ignore. What you can do from now on is when you find them have your veterinarian take an aspirate of them and either evaluate them under a microscope or send slides out to a pathologist to evaluate them. You may not always get a definitive answer but if you find out the growths are benign then at least you don't have to worry about them. Also if you find one that is cancerous you know that surgery is the best option at that point. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
