My dog has chronic diarrhea and won't eat. What food helps?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Newfoundland | Female | spayed | 1 year and 2 months old | 110 lbs

Maya has had food issues since we brought her home. Everything gives her diarrhea. Tried 11 different foods and the best so far has been Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream. It's still not the greatest. Still has runny/soft poop (Not all the time but most), but this food she will barely eat. It seems that the foods the have kind of worked are grain free and chicken and beef free. Any recommendations on foods?

Poor Maya! I would consider trying to stick to one brand as changing of the foods can also cause loose stools. You may consider a bland homemade diet of like lean ground turkey and rice and green beans to see if this settles her stomach. You can also use boneless, skinless chicken if you think she can tolerate it. If so, you can slowly transition her to the food you think is best. The other option is to always make her food but you want to make sure it is a balanced diet. You can visit www.balanceit.com for recipe options. Finally, if this doesn't help I would consider having your vet take a look at her feces. They will look for bacterial imbalance and intestinal parasites. If everything seems normal, I would ask to make sure they checked for giardia and campylobacter. These are two parasites/bacteria that are harder to find but can cause problems. Finally, I would consider putting her on a probiotic daily since this has been a chronic issue. See link below for suggestions.
