Dog licking and scooting after anal gland expression: What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 7 years and 8 months old | 8.3 lbs

My dog has been licking & dragging his butt ALOT. his anal glands were done 2 wks ago & then again ~5days ago bc he was doing this like usual when full. The tech did it this last time (usually vet does) but he has been doing this for days now & can tell it’s bothering him a lot so today we’ve been putting cream on him (vet gave us in past) & noticed his anus is inflamed/inverted; right below his anus there seems to be a lump & line of discoloring on skin. Should we go to ER or wait till morning?

I’m sorry Cash has been so uncomfortable. I see the irritation you mention, but I don’t see any other concerns in the picture. In my experience the reason patients don’t improve after having their anal sacs expressed is usually because they are infected. As long as you think he is comfortable enough to wait to see the veterinarian tomorrow, then I would ask them to look at the anal sac material under the microscope for any signs of infection. I usually treat these patients with antibiotics as well as steroids to make them more comfortable quickly. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon. Thank you for using Pet Coach.
