Can I safely keep a Betta and neon tetras in a 10-gallon tank with a divider?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Fish | Unknown - Fish | Male | 1 year and 1 month old

I want to put my male Betta and three neon tetras back in the same 10gal tank. The problem last time was that the stress level in the water was too high, so I separated them for a few months. Now I want to put them back together in the same tank, but with a divider separating them. Is this option a safe and healthy one for both my Betta and tetras? Or will I have the same results as my last water test?

You can try it, however the Betta may flare at and harass the tetras from the other side of the divider to the exclusion of eating. Of course, he may do nothing also. It really depends on the fish. Neither species will do well in water with elevated ammonia or nitrite levels.
