My feral cat's wound won't heal. What are my treatment options?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 2 years and 2 months old | 9 lbs

My spayed 2 year old cat’s wound won’t heal. She is a feral cat, living outdoors. For the past year, the vet continues to prescribe the same medicine- a steroid and another pill, which I think is an antibiotic pill. Because she’s feral, I can’t apply anything to her wound, or make her eat a pill that’s too bitter. Her wound isn’t getting much better after a year. What can I do?

Unfortunately if it has not responded to standard medications and no topical options are practical, further investigations under sedation are required in order to determine the underlying cause and guide the most appropriate treatment. A skin scraping and biopsy would be recommended in order to assess if this is the result of or even mixture of an auto-immune, parasitic, fungal or bacterial issue
