Why is my unspayed dog throwing up dark, lethargic, and not eating?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 30 lbs

I have a small breed dog who is throwing up watery dark piles, won't eat, throws up water, has heavy breathing, and no energy. The roads are iced over here so we can not take her to an emergency vet for help.

Hi. Poor Freya. That must be so hard to not be able to get out to the vet. Vomiting is unfortunately a vague sign that can occur from many possibilitites.  It can be from a dietary indiscretion, a food sensitivity, a GI infection,  pancreatitis, metabolic and endocrine conditions, foreign bodies in the intestines, and more.   In her case though, being not spayed yet, i am worried about pyometra. Pyometra is an infection in the uterus. It is considered a serious and life threatening condition that must be treated quickly. It occurs as a result of hormonal changes in the female's reproductive tract. It causes vomiting, lethargy, ankrexia, and sometimes vaginal discharge. For this reason, if at all possible, I'd get her in ASAP. In the meantime, you can try a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice for 3-5 days, then slowly change back to her regular diet if doing well.  Good luck.
