We have noticed that our dog Bella’s eye does this about every three months. It does not seem to bother her but gets very swelled. Any idea what this is? I have attached a picture.

It looks as if Bella has some mild conjunctivitis, or an inflammation of the soft tissues around the eye. This is usually caused by allergies or infection. Sometimes the swelling and inflammation is accompanied by discharge from the eye. For treatment, your vet may recommend a particular eye ointment that is antibacterial and has a steroid in it to help with the inflammation. Your vet may also want to check Bella’s eye to make sure there is not a scratch, or ulcer, on the eye. If allergies are the cause of the inflammation then an antihistamine like benedryl or Zyrtec may help. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
