Why is my cat's eye bothering him and not opening all the way?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 12 lbs

Hi; my cat has had issues off and on with his left eye. Eyelids aren’t abnormally swollen, it just seems like he can’t open the lids all the way, but it also bothers him to have it touched. Not hot to the touch or draining anything. He just looks so uncomfortable.

There are several things that could be going on. It could be an ulcer, a viral illness, injury to the eyeball, an autoimmune disease, glaucoma, etc. Any time symptoms are seen in the eye, I would address them immediately in case it is something serious that could affect the vision permanently. I would try and make an appointment with your veterinarian as soon as possible. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and I hope that Jacques feels better soon!
