Are essential oil diffusers safe for cats to inhale in my home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 8 lbs

Is using a water diffuser with essential oils in a two bedroom apartment dangerous to my cats? They can not touch the diffuser or go anywhere near the oils themselves but is inhalation dangerous? Every website/article has differing opinions. Some say pine, lavender, orange, lemon, cedarwood and mint is toxic, but all of these things can be found in pet litters/pet products. My oils are pure and from a very good supplier. Help! I'm so confused. To diffuse or not? If so which oils?

They can be harmful if low quality and not diluted properly. Other than that the other problem is unique to each pet... allergies! Just like people some animals can allergic or sensitive to certain odors. If you have not noticed any sneezing or vomiting then your are not likely sensitive to them
