How long can my puppy safely be outside in extreme winter temperatures?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 78 lbs

Happy new year! We live in Minnesota and our average temp is cold but recently we are 20 degrees below normal. Highs of -4 to -15 below with wind chills much lower. My question how long can our puppy be safely outside? Only 10 mins for frostbite for humans. When Teddy does go outside he loves to roll around in the snow. He is only let outside for a few minutes to go potty

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. At temperatures like this, I would be concerned with having Teddy out for more than 5 minutes. I would recommend using the boots for his feet that you can find online or at a local pet store and dressing him in a doggy sweater as this will help reduce chance of hypothermia / damage to the skin from the cold. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and would be more than happy to help you further.
