My dog ate chicken bones, then threw up a splinter. When to see vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shetland Sheepdog | Male | neutered | 1 year old

My shetland sheepdog ate some chicken bones he found in my mothers garden a few hours ago . I know chicken bones can splinter and might be dangerous. He threw up just now with a splintered bone in it. Should i go immediately to the vet? Or wait and see if he still throws up, has constipation...

All you can do it wait. Some dogs can pass these but it may cause vomiting and diarrhea along the way. I would not make her vomit any more up as this does run a risk of causing a tear or scratch in the esophagus and more damage. You can try to feed bread in the hopes it can stick to the bone shards and pad it along the way. If you notice continue vomiting or bloody diarrhea with no appetite, then I would get her to the vet
