How can I train my dog to stop excessive barking at house visitors?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | 8 months and 24 days old

I was wondering if there were any tips on how to train an excessive barker not to bark quite so much. Dibella has been very easy to train so far, but I'm at a loss at how to train her not to bark so much. It's intimidating to people that come to visit who aren't completely comfortable with big dogs. Since she's been easy to train so far, I'd rather try to teach her first rather than going straight to a bark collar.

Dibella is beautiful! Part of the answer depends on the situations when she is barking. If it is a situation when you are present, I would recommend calling her to you and asking her to sit or down or any other command while she is focusing on you. Obviously you can use treat rewards for this. The goal is to get her used to doing something else when she sees new people rather than bark at them. If you have friends that are comfortable with her, you can ask them to do the same thing. Have them give Dibella a command and reward her for doing what they ask, but not for barking. The goal is for her to associate getting treats with seeing people as long as she doesn't bark. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
