My dog has recurring runny diarrhea. Are probiotics effective?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 1 year and 3 months old | 3.96 lbs

Molly had diarrhea about two weeks ago after her vaccinations. Now she has diarrhea again that is very runny, it just seems to come out of her ; but her moral doesn’t seem to be affected, she still runs around and plays it’s just that diarrhea will start coming out of her. Since she had diarrhea two weeks ago, at that time I called the vet and they recommended giving her probiotics. So I started the probiotics tonight, just wanted to make sure I’m doing the right thing?

Yes, I would have recommended a probiotic. Which one are you using? It needs to be one made for dogs. Human probiotics or dairy products will not work and may actually make the diarrhea worse. I know you already got a probiotic but my favorite is Fortiflora. It has the most extensive testing so we know it works well. http://www.allivet.com/p-1130-purina-pro-plan-veterinary-diets-fortiflora-dog-supplement-box-of-30.aspx Hope this helps. Best wishes.
