My 5-month-old puppy has runny poop but acts normal. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | unspayed | 5 months and 8 days old | 18 lbs

My 5 month old puppy has really runny watery poo. She has been teething but I don't know if they are connected. She is playing running and acting herself just very sloppy poo that I can not even pick up, what could be causing this she hasn't vomited at all and everything else is normal. I gave her chicken and rice last night and there hasn't been a change in her poo as of yet. I will give her more today but if she is acting fine and herself should I be worried ? What else can I do

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Diarrhea can be caused by many things. Most commonly we see diarrhea caused from the diet or from an imbalance of good bacteria in the gut. I recommend continuing a diet of chicken and rice until the diarrhea is resolved and adding in a probiotic such as Purina fortiflora which can be found online or at your local pet store. I would also recommend having the stool tested for intestinal parasites at the veterinary clinic. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Intestinal parasites are a common cause of diarrhea in puppies, as well as food intolerance or allergies, dietary indiscretion, bacterial or viral infection, stress colitis, among others. If it lasts longer than 24 hours, I would recommend having Hazel examined by a vet to see what could be going on.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Meera. If she is otherwise acting normal, then I would hold food for 24 hours. This will allow her gastrointestinal tract to rest and can potentially resolve the diarrhea. If this does not help or if she develops blood in the stool, then she will need to see her veterinarian. She will likely need fecal testing and possibly a medication to resolve her signs. Intestinal parasites and diet issues are the most common causes of diarrhea in young dogs. If her diarrhea becomes ongoing, then discuss a diet change with her veterinarian. I hope this information helps you!
