My dog's anal glands smell. Should I express them or wait for a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 19 days old | 20 lbs

Our pup has a bad smell coming from her anal area. We have had experience with our dogs needing to get their anal glands squeezed. Should we do this to our pup or wait? And if we do wait could it be dangerous for our pup?

If you are comfortable expressing them you can. If not, unless you see swelling or redness around the area then it is fine to wait into your vet or groomer opens to do this for you. You may need to give her a bath to help get the smell off though. If it is red or swollen then that is a sign of abscess and can be painful to express so you will want your vet to handle that
