My dog has bleeding gums and mouth pain. Does he need a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Husky | Male | neutered | 2 years and 6 months old | 65 lbs

Hello, Our husky keeps wincing and twitching his mouth, occasionally. He is 2 1/2 years old and 65 lbs. We suspect the pain is coming from his rear right side of his mouth. There has been bleeding near the gumline for the past 24 hours. He is still eating but it appears uncomfortable when chewing kibble, we have been mixing his food with water and he eats it well. Is this something that needs immediate medical attention? Do you think tooth related or gum? Self help advice?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the gum is bleeding I would be worried about an infected tooth or a foreign body under the gum line. I wouldn’t say it’s an emergency since he is eating but I would recommend it be addressed soon as Max sounds like he is in pain. An emergency vet is likely not going to be able to fix the problem anyway but could prescribe some pain medications if warranted. Please do not give anything over the counter for pain as it may not be safe for pets and could cause delayed treatment for Max. If you wait until Tuesday I would recommend continuing to soften his food with water. Good luck and kisses to Max!
