My cat licked chocolate from her paw. Will she get chocolate toxicity?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 7 years and 6 months old | 7 lbs

It seems like I cant catch a break... is 4-5 licks from her paw enough to cause chocolate toxicity? I think she stuck her foot in my cup when i wasnt watching her. I have cappuccino that has dutch chocolate in it (but also other ingredients such as dry creamer and coffee and some other things.) Its 3tbsp(27gs) a serving and my vets are closed for Christmas and Im w/o transport til Tuesday. Is this a tbsp in the pic? Also ingredient pic is provided.

If she just stuck her foot in your drink and licked her paw then I wouldn't be too concerned. If she a lot drank directly from the cup then I would be more concerned. That small amount shouldn't cause any toxicity. It may give her an upset tummy so if you see any vomiting or diarrhea, let your vet know when they reopen. Other things to look for are restlessness, dilated pupils, muscle tremors, and worst case scenario seizures. Most of these are very unlikely, but if you see anything like these, I would try to get her to an emergency clinic if at all possible. And it is hard to say for sure, but I bet that is a teaspoon. If you have measuring spoons, those are the best things to use when trying to measure ingredients. I hope this helps!

I don’t think this much would cause her to have a toxic effect of caffeine and the chocolate but it could upset her tummy especially if she has a sensitivity stomach. Watch her closely. If she is continuing to get sick I would have your vet take a look at her. Your vet will be able to give her something to settle her stomach and make her feel better before the holidays. I hope this helps!
