My dog has tapeworms. Does her dewormer cover them? Can I buy meds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 5 days old | 1.5 lbs

I just asked about my chihuahua chica. I was told she has a tapeworm. My other question is she was deformed Sunday at the pet clinic. Do those dewormera not work against tapeworm. And if not can I buy the suggested medications in store? Thank you so much for the help.

It truly depends on the type of dewormer and there are so many different types. Most work on tapeworms but not all. I would call your vet to find it the type of dewormer used and whether it covers tapes. If not, they should be able to prescribe her something to work. Finally, know that tapeworms come from ingesting a flea so make sure she is on a high quality flea preventative like comfortis, bravecto, or nexgard. I hope this helps!
