My dog's eye looks strange, but he's not in pain. Does he need a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 5 years and 2 months old | 70 lbs

Should I take him in to have his eye looked at? He doesn't seem to be in pain and I'm not sure what's causing this.

Hi there! Thank you for posting this question. Yes, I think his eye should be seen. The motto I learned in vet school is “ a closed eye is a painful eye and a painful eye is an ocular emergency”. I would be worried that he could have scratched it, he could have a retrobulbar abscess, or even a disorder called Horners syndrome. They will stain the eye and look for any wounds. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
