What's causing my dog's itchy skin and recurring swollen bumps?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 4 years and 3 months old | 13 lbs

For the past 2 days my dog gets these small swollen bumps and they go away and he gets new ones. He also started itching ALOT since and all over his body. No new food has been given. There is no sign of fleas or ticks but I bathe him with flea and tick killer anyways. My other dog itches a little and no bumps on that dog. What would u recommend or guess is the cause?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry to hear Monstle is having skin issues. Bumps like you are describing may be hives, which could be secondary to allergies. Additionally, it could be due to skin parasites (fleas or mites), an infection (bacterial or fungal) or another underlying issue. I would recommend he be evaluated by his regular veterinarian to determine what the underlying cause for the bumps is, and start any treatment (antihistamine, anti-itch medication, antibiotic, parasiticide) that may be needed to help resolve it. Good luck!
