My spayed kitten won't walk after surgery suit. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 6 months and 13 days old

Hi, my female 4 months old kitten was spayed yesterday 5pm. Came home fine, drank, ate, slept. Woke up today fine, but poking at her patch, so I dressed her with the surgery cloth vet told me to. When doing so, she went nuts and tried to take it out, walked funny, and finally calmed and laid down today about 4pm - it's now 11pm and she's been there since, doesn't want to get up and walk. Will eat and drink if offered, but doesn't want to get up at all. Incision looks okay and healthy.

I would recommend placing a call to your vet to determine if pain medications are appropriate. If she was given an injection of pain medication at surgery time, it's likely that she felt pretty good for about 24 hours, but as spaying is an abdominal procedure there can be considerable intra-abdominal pain for several days afterwards. Isis may need additional pain medication to feel comfortable at this point.

She needs to get used to the cloth. At the moment she is confused and is probably trying to figure out how to walk around. Five her time, By tomorrow she probably will have experimented with walking. Tomorrow morning she will be hungry enough that she will probably walk to the food. Make sure she has water available tonight, but do not leave food overnight. Some kitties are more awkward than others.

Wearing clothes can be an adjustment for a cat, and they can be stubborn about it. Isis is likely lying there pouting she has to wear it, and she will adjust to it wearing it. As long as she is eating and drinking, and her incision looks fine and healthy, I wouldn't be too concerned about it.
