My dog has a red, raw, round sore under his leg. Is it ringworm?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bichon Frise | Male | neutered

I dog had a scab on his belly under his leg. Since been cut I see a red raw sore. It's round but his hair's come through is sore. I thought it might be ringworm but I'm not so sure. I work in a pharmacy so I know what to look for in humans. But in animals not sure. Please could you help I have a picture of it as well.

You are correct that it could be ringworm. In dogs, the characteristic lesion is circular with the center of it being red (it does look like the ones humans get), but it can be hairless. I would take Archie into the vet first thing in the morning to have the sore examined and diagnosed. If he does have ringworm, the vet will prescribe an anti-fungal to treat it.

This could be ringworm, or a hot spot or a bacterial infection. Best have your vet examine the spot. Ringworm usually does not make a red painful sore or a big scab. It could have been an injury as well.
