My cat is vomiting bile. Should I take him to the vet and remove food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 8 lbs

Hi, my cat has vomited four times in the past 8 hours. The first time, he vomited up food, but the last three times, he has just been vomiting up bile. He has only ever vomited once before; about a month ago, and it was just a hairball. Should I take him to the vet? Also, in the meantime, should I put away his food and water bowls? Please help, I'm extremely concerned.

Poor Jeeves! I would take him into a vet as soon as possible. He has vomited a lot in a relatively short period of time, which could be caused by pancreatitis, severe GI illness, or a foreign body. The vet will do a physical exam, routine blood tests, a urinalysis, and possibly x-rays to diagnose what is causing the vomiting so he can be treated. I would remove his food, but continue to allow him access to water. Please take him into a vet now if you can.

You should definitely take him to the vet as soon as possible, vomiting multiple times is highly abnormal, it could be a foreign body in the GI tract, an infection or a pancreatic disease, he will need to be checked and then will probably need a blood test, an xray or an ultrasound done in order to find out what is causing this. For now take the food away but leave the water available.
