Puppy has yellow watery diarrhea but acts normal. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 8 days old | 2 lbs

9 week old puppy having yellow watery diarrhea since yesterday. Fluctuates between diarrhea and semi firm stool. Still eating, drinking and playing as normal. I have been giving her rice and chicken to help. Should I be worried about this or just watch her for a little longer? Or any other suggestions to try?

You are doing the right thing by giving her chicken and rice, as that's recommended to try if it's thought the diarrhea is caused by GI upset. It could be, however, that Maggie has intestinal worms, which would also cause diarrhea and is coming in young puppies. I would take her into the vet today for an exam with a sample of her feces. The vet can examine her feces under the microscope for signs of worms, and give her a deworming treatment for it.

Congrats on your new puppy, but I'm sorry that Rocky is having diarrhea! Intestinal worms are very common in puppies, and this could be the cause of his diarrhea. I would give him a deworming treatment such as Panacur, which you can get OTC. It's a three day course of treatment, and you will have to give him another course of treatment two weeks after you finish the first to kill all the worms. You can also try feeding him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days to see if that helps with the diarrhea. If the diarrhea continues after you have treated him for worms, or continues on the bland diet, then I would have Rocky seen by a vet.
